How to use a foundation sponge and powder puff

When choosing a makeup sponge, consider the product you plan to apply as well as the shape of the tool. Foundation preparation and powder application can call for different movements. Treating Foundation Sponge and Setting Powder Sponge as separate tools helps make that choice clear.

Start with the tool’s directions, then check the amount and placement in the mirror. You can make adjustments one area at a time.

Foundation Sponge: damp preparation, pressing movements

Foundation Sponge is lightly wetted and squeezed to remove excess water before use. Apply makeup with the damp sponge using pressing movements. Use the grip band to hold the tool while lifting and pressing it against the skin.

  1. Lightly wet the sponge and squeeze out excess water so it is damp.
  2. Start with a small amount of complexion makeup.
  3. Lift and press the sponge against your chosen area.
  4. Check the edges and intensity, then add a little product if needed.

When blending foundation from the centre outwards, complete one area first. Check where the existing layer is enough before adding more elsewhere. Keeping the amount similar when trying a different movement makes the comparison easier.

Setting Powder Sponge: a separate tool for powder

Setting Powder Sponge is a triangular powder applicator. Place a little powder on its surface and apply with gentle pressing movements. Its narrower tip can be directed towards smaller areas, such as around the eyes or beside the nose, while avoiding contact with the eyes.

With Setting Powder, choose the area before applying. Covering a broad area and reaching a small detail beside the nose use different movements. Change the angle of the applicator as you move between them.

When might you use both?

For a foundation-based look, start by blending foundation with the prepared Foundation Sponge. If you decide to add powder at the end, choose Setting Powder Sponge for that step. You can also use just one tool when the makeup you choose only needs one.

Try a new applicator with a complexion product you already know. Keeping the foundation and amount familiar helps you assess the tool itself. Change one detail in each comparison and notice which movement you prefer.

Follow the individual care directions

Follow the product’s care directions for cleaning and drying. Check the grip band and edges while cleaning the tool. Keep its care instructions separate from the directions for the makeup you apply with it.

The useful distinction is simple: choose the makeup product and area first, then the tool intended for that step. Your two accessories can each have a clear place in the routine.
